Craven County bears the name of William, Earl of Craven, one of the eight original Lord Proprietors of the province of Carolina, and his nephew, William, Lord Craven, who succeeded him as Lord Proprietor. Established in 1712, Craven County was the site of North Carolina's first capitol, New Bern. Founded in 1710 by Baron Christopher de Graffenried of Bern, Switzerland, New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina and the first state capital.
